filming underwater

Camera & Lighting

I typically shoot with an Arriflex 435 in an underwater housing, but I have used many different cameras and housings to fit an assortment of productions’ various formats. Lighting for tank or composite work usually entails surface lighting augmented with underwater lights, usually from Hydroflex.

Light Meters

I possess all of my own light meters for filming underwater. I have both Spectra Pro Digital, Minolta Auto Meter IVF & Minolta Spot Meter housed in underwater casings, and I have Sekonic and Ikelite underwater reflected light meters.

Visual Effects

I have extensive experience lighting both blue and green screen for composite cinematography, examples of which are displayed in my demo reel.

Communication

In a medium 4 times denser than air, communication is key. For this to succeed an underwater loudspeaker is implemented, allowing the surface crew to communicate with all under the water. In certain situations the usage of underwater cues or sync dialogue, as was implemented on the 20th Century Fox production of “Pathfinder”, has been undertaken by an additional loudspeaker compatible with DAT and current sound playback equipment.
